I've beeen reading a book written by Richard Sterns (the president of World Vision US). It's a challenging story about how he left the business world as president of Lenox China and became president of WVUS. It's a transparent discussion of his struggle to follow God's will (which required a lot of sacrifice). He weaves reflection on scripture with his life story, which includes some moving stories of the mission field.Richard Stearns suggests that the hole in our Gospel is the Christian church's lack of response to the poverty and oppression in the world. You have to understand, I'm a HUGE World Vision fan. I've seen them in action in Malawi. They engage the people of the nations where they minister -in caring for their own people. They weave together a wholistic approach of caring for the individual/community - their body/mind/soul.
Bill Hybels (founding pastor of Willow Creek Church) distributed 10,000 copies to the people of his church. Read the book. You can get a copy here: The Hole in the Gospel. You can also find more information (including a study guide) by clicking here.
