OTC Devotion: Fast Track Week 1, Day 2

Today's fast track devotion covered Genesis 2 and Psalm 8. The reading confirmed what I wrote about yesterday's devotion. The image of God distinguishes from the rest of creation so much that Adam couldn't find any "helper suitable for him". We need relationship in order to find completion. It's why we feel loneliness, depression and apathy when separated from human companionship. Some of us may be able to go longer without it but we can not live apart from others.

Moving from Genesis 1&2 to Psalm 8 was like going from the main meal to dessert. David holds the balance of "less than God, more than creature" in his song of praise to the creator.

"...what are mere mortals that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned them with glory and honor." (Psalm 8:4-5 TNIV)

In today's world we run along two extremes: one on side humans are just another population of animals with little respect or honor. As a matter of fact, we're often seen as a virus infecting the earth. On the other side, we're glorified as 'little gods' - people see us as limitless with the ability to eventually solve all our problems, not needing the crutch of a God.

In the bible, we are less than God - the similarities we have with creatures is evidence that we are part of the created order. However, we are far more than creatures. We bear the image of a living God. We create - art, literature, philosophy, architecture, education. We are privileged with the honor of God's image and the responsibility of being His children.

It's good to be human.
